The drainage holes are set up about 2" from the Base. Water is liable to pool in the bottom of this as a result. If your roots go that far down and the plants are not semi-aquatic this planter will kill them.I personally took a soldering iron and melted in more reasonable drainage - trouble being it likes to sit flush with flat surfaces making drainage difficult. Only about a mm or so space is given for the feet and they cover 80% of the run-off area.I bought this for some extra space for my orchids to grow. Naturally it's utterly unsuited without the modifications and placing it on a container of gravel to drain properly.I have quite a lot of Elho products in the garden, they're bright, bold and add a splash of colour during the months when flowers struggle to grow. Despite the low price tag the quality is very good and the plastic is thick enough not to distort when full of soil and planted and although they will fade if left outside year round the colour softens evenly and if you didn't know what colour they started off as you'd never know the difference....I have left several of their products outside for 3 years now and am still very happy with the condition. Now on to this specific planter...it's a lovely classic bright cherry red and measures 50 cm long, 19.5 cm high and 15.6 cm deep although the internal dimensions are smaller. It takes 10 litres of soil, which is quite a useful volume for the size of the trough. You can buy the matching saucer along with brackets if you want to use it as a hanging planter but I'm just using it as a trough on the ground. You need to drill drainage holes in the base, as it's not pre-drilled.These products are very hard to source in the UK so I'm very pleased I can continue to buy them from Amazon who ship from Europe (presumably because Elho is a Dutch company) and still manage to offer them for sale at a great price! The perfect size for my windowstill and I like that if you get a shorter one the other dimensions stay the same.I had the 90cm & 50cm in taupe which had winter violas which have just given up but I'm hoping they will come back. In the meantime I wanted something new plants but not in brown this time. I got 3 x 40cm as the new plants will need protecting over winter and smaller is easier to fit in shed. But could only get grey x 3. So I had some slate blue (just like the blue on here) Rust-oleum spray paint. Took 5 minutes to do all three, couple of drips but my fault and they look great. In the heat of this summer took seconds to dry. No primer, no sanding etc. Simple. So if my violas don't come back (they already are, incredible plants that flowered from Oct to July and where still blooming but looked a bit rubbish when I cut them back) I'll be doing the same with the taupe pots. May be do two colours with some masking tape.It has 2 holes but you need more, loads more. Easy to do with a drill just have a piece of wood underneath where you're drilling to avoid cracks.I bought 2 of these to grow salad items. There are 4 circular indentations on the base where it is easier to drill drainage holes. I only had a problem drilling one of these areas when the bottom of the container split, but with a bit of strong glue this was soon fixed. It would be preferable if these could be sold with drainage holes already in place, which is why I deducted 1 star.I like the fact these are coloured, not the usual terracotta or dark green colours. I have bought larger ones in white and red and with these in purple they brighten up the garden.Very pleased with the colour shape and depth of these 50cm oblong planters. I bought the compact 10l compost for each planter and it is the exact amount needed to fill it to the top. I am using these for spring flowering bulbs. As mentioned the drainage is in a raised position rather than on the base. I am open minded regarding this as it may well be better having less water run off onto the stone surface they are on. On the other hand we do get heavy rain at times and might the lower inch or more become waterlogged...not sure. But presently I am very happy. The planters are well made and the shape easy on the eye. The other plus is the very reasonable pricing. As these are a European product I know that supplies run out quickly hence ordering 2 straightaway. I am considering getting matching oblong saucers but they are not as easy to find in stock.
